Remember, you are never required to pay fees to receive a prize from a legitimate sweepstakes or contest. There are still many people trying to get away with these scams. The following article just appeared in the National Fraud Information Center reports:
THE MOUNTIES ALWAYS GET THEIR MAN
Operation Phonebusters, a project of the Ontario Provincial Police, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Better Business Bureau, the Canadian Bankers Association, and other Canadian groups, announced that Darrel Alan Dorsey of Kingston, Ontario, had plead guilty to charges of defrauding the public. He was convicted and sentenced to 12 months in jail for violating the Canadian Criminal Code. Dorsey ran three companies, Great Dane and Fantasy Productions in Montreal, and Ivan's Endeavors in Dollard des Ormeaux, Quebec. All three companies contacted consumers, claiming they had won a car but needed to send in fees to take possession. Consumers were asked to pay $400 up front and another $453.86 upon receipt of a COD package, allegedly containing vehicle registration papers. Of the 779 Canadians that paid, none received a vehicle. In total, they lost approximately $953,870.
